KENPO MARTIAL ARTS- Modernized Ed Parker system

The art of Kenpo is taught by Raff Cousens, the head instructor. A 3rd degree black belt who is taught by Master Herb Cody 10th degree founder of the Sonoma County Martial Art Centers. This is a serious self defense combat art which stresses punching, striking, chopping, thrusting, and poking as well as throws, joint locks and takedowns.

At SCMAC, adults and children come from all ages and walks of life. When we say combat at SCMAC, we mean defending yourself against attacks you might face in life. The foundation of our art is the actual kicking, joint locking, punching, striking, throwing, and submissions and chokes.  These Kenpo techniques still work and have been adjusted to fit our needs in these modern times. From the law enforcement officer who needs to subdue an adversary using necessary and reasonable force, to the female high school student who needs to defend herself from assailants walking through a parking lot.
Kenpo works!

Okazaki ju-jitsu is the parent art of this Kenpo karate.  Many techniques were passed down from master Henry S. Okazaki. Learn techniques that have been lost in the modern sport forms of martial arts. In these modern times those who are turning martial arts into a sport are losing track of its true purpose, self defense.  With all the free form fighting tournaments true self defense techniques have been lost. This is not to say that the new MMA style is not effective. By turning martial arts into a spectator sport the true spirit and style of Kenpo can be forgotton. Not true at this school.

Mr. Cody and Mr. Cousens have taken Kenpo which is in a constant state of refinement to its next level.
With a solid back ground in Kenpo you don’t have to prove anything to anyone.  A kenpo student becomes secure enough in their ability to take care of the “situation” when and if it develops. This confidence reflects in their attitude. Karate can be used to defuse most altercations by using verbal strategy.

Kenpo offers mental and physical  benefits irrespective of sex, strength, size or age. Knowing how to use different parts of your body as a weapon instills confidence. Through confidence one gains self respect which eventually becomes self restraint and discipline. As it exercises it tones the body, strengthens the legs and insures good health, which is a contributing factor for a long  life span.

At SCMAC we teach Karate with an athletic awareness in a way that it can be done with the entire family. Also offered is a children’s Kenpo program which has been a great success in our community and is a big part of our school. (Testimonials coming soon)
